Menswear guide

Kibbe body types for men

Use clothing line, scale and drape to explore outfits that feel right to you. This guide translates those ideas into shirts, jackets, trousers and everyday layers. It is an independent styling interpretation, not a verified test or a set of rules about masculinity.

Ten current identities, with historical guides preserved

David Kibbe describes ten image identities. Older thirteen-type lists also include pure Classic, Natural and Gamine. Our guides keep those terms for reference. The outfit experiments here are our independent interpretation, not an official typing method. See David Kibbe’s framework and his updated book, Power of Style.

Start with fit, then compare the line

A tight upper back, long sleeve or pulling trouser rise is first a garment-fit problem. Check the right size and cut before using an image identity to explain it. Take two full-body photos with the same camera height and lighting, then compare complete outfits in the same dress code.

Three useful checks

  • Move: can you sit, reach and walk comfortably?
  • Compare: does a sharper or softer fabric produce the line you prefer?
  • Repeat: does the same pattern show up in another outfit?

Five families, ten current identities

These formulas are starting points. Height conventions and examples written for womenswear do not automatically transfer to menswear. You can use an outfit idea without first confirming a label.

Dramatic family

Dramatic · Soft Dramatic

Explore length and a connected line. Compare sharper construction with softer drape while keeping the outfit long and comfortable.

Work outfit experiment

Full-length trousers, a simple shirt or draped knit, and a longer jacket. Compare a crisp fabric with a fluid one before changing the whole silhouette.

Casual outfit experiment

Straight or long tapered jeans, a clean knit and a long coat or soft layer. Flat shoes and sneakers can work; match their visual weight to the outfit.

Natural family

Flamboyant Natural · Soft Natural

Explore upper-body ease and relaxed construction. This does not mean buying everything oversized or hiding your shape.

Work outfit experiment

An unstructured blazer, a comfortable open-neck shirt and trousers with enough room to sit. Try soft shaping if you enjoy a more defined waist.

Casual outfit experiment

An overshirt, a well-fitting tee and straight trousers. Check upper-back movement and sleeve length; choose texture because you like it, not because a type requires it.

Classic family

Dramatic Classic · Soft Classic

Explore an even, moderate outline. Compare a slightly crisper edge with gentle softness, keeping the outfit's proportions consistent.

Work outfit experiment

Moderately fitted trousers, a simple shirt and a jacket with a tidy shoulder line. Compare moderate lapels and quiet patterns before adding a statement detail.

Casual outfit experiment

A fine knit, straight jeans or chinos and clean shoes. Try an even hem and restrained layering; this is not a requirement to dress formally.

Gamine family

Flamboyant Gamine · Soft Gamine

Explore compact proportions and deliberate changes in line. Being short alone does not establish a Gamine identity.

Work outfit experiment

A compact jacket, a neat shirt or soft knit and trousers with a deliberate hem. Try a cuff or collar detail instead of assuming every item must be cropped.

Casual outfit experiment

A defined jacket hem, comfortable trousers and a small contrast in color or texture. Compare this with a connected outfit to see which rhythm you prefer.

Romantic family

Romantic · Theatrical Romantic

Explore softly shaped clothing and fluid fabrics. Comfort and how fabric falls matter more than facial resemblance or body measurements.

Work outfit experiment

A softly constructed jacket, a knit polo or fluid shirt and gently tapered trousers. Compare subtle shaping with a straighter cut while keeping room to move.

Casual outfit experiment

A soft knit, comfortable trousers and rounded shoes. A light layer can add structure without stiffness; use the amount of detail you actually enjoy.

Find your Kibbe type, then apply it to menswear

Choose menswear before checkout. Your full report analyzes your photo and height, explains your Kibbe type and compares alternatives. It then uses your clothing preferences to create six outfit illustrations and a ten-piece capsule. An AI identity is an estimate; the report can also work from a type you choose.

A note on celebrity examples

Many male celebrity typings circulated online are community guesses. Use a reference outfit to study fabric, length and detail; resemblance to the person wearing it cannot confirm your type. This guide does not label unverified celebrity examples as fact.
